I love coffee. Sometimes when I take a nice warm sip of a latte on a cold winter's morning I seriously think my soul smiles. So why would I want an alternative? Well, unfortunately coffee isn't really that good for me. The caffeine from coffee can negatively impact your thyroid, metabolism, and sex hormones. Yuck, there's enough stuff I can't control that is bad for me — but I am willingly turning my body into a dehydrated and acidic environment which holds onto fat? It also turns out when I hold off on the coffee, or seriously limit my intake, I appreciate it all the more without that "How the hell will I make it through the day without my coffee?!?" feeling. I didn't cut coffee out all at once, nor did I cut it out 100%, but I no longer need it and I can feel the difference in my health and energy. Turns out I have WAY more energy without it. My skin is also less dry and my sleep has felt deeper.
Here's a brief overview of my experiment:
Week 1-2: Green tea instead of coffee Monday-Friday and 1-2 coffees (total) on the weekends. I felt really these 2 weeks, I won't lie. I love a green tea here and there but it just did not give me the same coffee buzz I craved. I yawmed so much, it was just silly.
Week 2-3: I decided to drink a serving of Vibrant Cleanse to start my mornings. I then had a very basic smoothie, generally 1 scoop Green Vibrance, 1 scoop Rainbow Vibrance, 1 tbsp Maca powder, some Almond Milk, Ice, and water. I stopped yawning. I had a lot of energy and my mood greatly improved. I didn't even think about coffee (most days, anyway). I rewarded myself with 1 latte on the weekend. But, I didn't feel like I needed it.
That brings us to today and I want to share with you one of my delicious coffee alternatives. It's quick and easy to make either in the blender, or you could lightly heat it on the stove if you crave that warmth. I prefer cleaning my blender to cleaning my French press. If this kind of thing doesn't work for you, but you still want to try to cut down on coffee, try these alternatives. Your body will thank you.
1 tbsp Maca powder
1 scoop Rainbow Vibrance
1 tbsp organic cocoa powder (or cacao powder)
1 cup almond milk
1 cup water
Dash of cinnamon
Honey to taste
Directions: Combine ingredients and blend or combine ingredients in small sauce pan and heat on low for 10-15 minutes.
Note: I don't like sweet drinks in the morning, or really in general (occasional Coke in a glass bottle exception), so this drink is not particularly sweet. Maca powder has a toffee-like sort of nutty flavor and Rainbow Vibrance has a berry flavor to it. Those flavors go really well with Cocoa. Cocoa powder can be very bitter for some though, so add some honey, cinnamon, agave syrup, or maybe even some cardamom spice (to give it a Chai tea latte flavor)! Maca helps balance your hormones and gives you natural energy. Rainbow Vibrance is chock full of antioxidants that are energizing and help scavenge free radicals. Energy and health should go hand in hand, rather than trying to chase after energy with caffeine.
